-- One more IPTV player is looking to add more social media elements to its service. Italy’s Fastweb is currently trialling a recommendation service to drive more content usage. It will not only track a user’s previous viewing behaviour but it will aggregate recommendations and viewing patterns from other users based on categories like genre, actor, director, etc. Fastweb, owned by Swisscom, is using technology for the pilot from Neptuny, which already provides Fastweb with network optimisation for its IPTV service. release

-- Another commercial spinoff from BBC Worldwide: the broadcaster has signed a deal with Polyphony Digital, the makers of the Gran Turismo video game, for 40 episodes of its Top Gear motoring program to be available via Sony’s (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation3 online network. The prgrams will form part of “GT TV,” which will come out with the release of Gran Turismo 5, scheduled for some time in 2008. The test track used in Top Gear will also feature in the game itself. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Gran Turismo currently claims to be the world’s most popular racing video game, with 47 million copies sold.

-- ABCe figures released this week indicate that the Guardian is still the UK’s most popular online newspaper, with 17 million unique visitors in September. The Times took second place with 12.5 million viewers; and The Sun had 10.7 million, with the Telegraph closely behind at 10.6 million.
