Broadband Content Bits: Ofcom Deregs, EC Plan Advances

-- Ofcom: The media regulator is deregulating the wholesale broadband market for 70 percent of the UK, dropping a compulsion that BT (NYSE: BT) supplies its Datastream network access product to competitors at a “fair and reasonable” cost. The deregulation will happen in areas served by four or more ISPs and where neither has significant power. Watch out for whether BT will now raise its wholesale prices as a consequence…

-- Euro plan: Europe’s Council of Audio-Visual Ministers meets in Brussels today and Thursday to discuss media commissioner Vivianne Reding’s January proposals for a Single Market for Online Music, Films and Games. The EC wants to harmonise media licensing across the continent and guarantee DRM interoperability and transparency. At this week’s meetings, ministers from member states will be asked their views.
