Free Music Streaming: We7 Signs on SonyBMG; 24-7 Signs on EMI

By Rafat Ali - Sun 09 Mar 2008 07:56 PM PST

Oxford-based We7, which offers music tracks for free with ads tacked on the front, has signed its first major label deal with SonyBMG, which will license its catalog of more than 250,000 tracks to the company’s new online music streaming service, reports Guardian. Peter Gabriel-backed We7 already offers a free music download service with indies, but SonyBMG deal is for streaming only, though could be extended to downloads later. This new free streaming service will only be offered to its existing members before rolling it out to new ones. It will pay royalties to Sony (NYSE: SNE) BMG for each song listened to.

Meanwhile 24-7 Entertainment, another London-based digital music store service provider, has signed on EMI for its white-label service..the story says it is close to launching an unlimited music download service for a Nordic mobile and broadband provider, rumored to be Denmark’s TDC. The service, developed under the codename UMAP or unlimited music across all portals, will allow all mobile and broadband customers of the company unlimited access to music for no extra cost (beyond the access/ISP fee). The company’s service will launch with million tracks and talks are on with Universal and Warner.
