Lagardere Takes Majority In French Women’s Online Publisher Doctissimo, For $109M

French media group Lagardere is buying a 53.38 percent stake in the French online publisher for women’s content Doctissimo from its founders, for a total of about $109 million. The deal--based on the price of 30.50 euros ($45.25) a share--values the company at 138 million euros ($204.74 million).

The company said the acquisition of Doctissimo will boost its position on the internet, especially in the women and health segments, where it now becomes France’s leading women’s site with 6.5 million unique visitors a month. Aside from its main site for women, Doctissimo’s network includes Ados.fr, a site targeted at teenagers; Momes.net, a site for younger children and their mothers; Gyneweb.fr, a site focused on pregnancy and birth; and Fluctuat.net, an upscale leisure and entertainment site.

In 2007, Doctissimo generated revenues of 11.47 million euros ($17 million), up 75 percent from its 2006 figure of 8.65 million euros ($12.83 million) (release).

Updated: Reuters: As a result of the deal, Lagardere Active, the digital unit, was now “one year ahead” of its goal to generate between 5 and 10 percent of its sales from the digital business, Didier Quillot, head of the unit, told a conference call on Friday. Digital sales would make up 5-10 percent of Lagardere Active sales in France from 2008 and over 10 percent in U.S. from 2008, Quillot added.
