News Sites Still More Popular Than Social Nets, Younger Gen Still Plugged In

By Robert Andrews - Tue 20 May 2008 06:41 AM PST

Think all 20-somethings have fled content sites to lob sheep, share vampires and poke each other? Think again. Some 42 percent of internet users in Europe regularly visit online news sites, against 28 percent who go to video sites and just 15 percent who use social networks, JupiterResearch’s latest report says. Even more refreshing for online news publishers - those aged 25 to 34 are most interested in visiting their sites.

For those who publishers feel threatened by the rise of aggregators like Google (NSDQ: GOOG) News, more good stuff - branded news sites are still more popular than either portals or search sites everywhere except Germany… but not amongst that key younger bracket. So, whilst the next generation is interested in news, it also wants to read it on its own terms - but not necessarily on their favourite social sites.
