After home broadband and TV, add another service to Orange’s growing arsenal - radio. The telco is unveiling LiveRadio, a WiFi-enabled radio device that comes with access to more than 4,000 internet radio stations without a computer. Despite the fuss about the introduction of digital terrestrial and satellite radio services in recent years, it’s clear that the internet is already well stocked with live radio programming - nevermind DAB or XM; IP could well become the ideal radio medium in future. Orange’s device is essentially the Phoenix model made by Com One, a gadget that, through two AA batteries, doubles as a a portable radio and can be used as MP3 player speakers. LiveRadio also does podcasts. Such devices have been on the market for a couple of years now, introduced as take-up of home broadband and wireless has grown. Orange first launched the gadget in its native France back in spring 2007. Rajar says three in 10 people in the UK listen to radio on the internet.
