Print Bits: News Corp Mags, Northcliffe Geo-Data, WalesOnline

By Robert Andrews - Tue 17 Jun 2008 06:59 AM PST

-- News Magazines: News Corp (NYSE: NWS) is closing its News Magazines unit, which publishes the LoveIt women’s mag and BSkyB (NYSE: BSY) customers’ SkyMag, after losing almost £10 million in its last financial year. Some mags will continue under sister units, like News International’s Sunday Times Travel for example. Boston Consulting Group submits a report on streamlining News International this week, Guardian says.

-- Northcliffe: Associated Northcliffe Digital has rebooted 10 of its 55 regional ThisIs news sites, allowing journalists to add geolocation data to stories. The aim - “We’re trying to extend our reach away from what are our traditional newsprint footprints,” content strategy director Robert Hardie told Press Gazette. In other word, Northcliffe’s “hyperlocal” will be data-driven. The changes will be made visible in a couple of months, when enough stories have been created with the new data fields.

-- WalesOnline: As Trinity Mirror (LSE: TNI) continues disposing of its regional “ic” portals, icWales has been rebranded “WalesOnline”. That follows the recent renaming of its Western Mail & Echo publisher - which publishes the Western Mail, South Wales Echo, Wales On Sunday and Celtic Weekly Newspapers - to “MediaWales”, in keeping with the integration of those titles’ newsrooms.
