Belgian Newspaper Group Warns Yahoo On Content, Waits On Google Decision

By David Kaplan - Thu 18 Jan 2007 12:34 PM PST

Copiepresse, the Belgian copyright defense group that has been waging war against Google for the past few months, issued a new warning Thurday to Yahoo’s French division to stop reproducing snippets of Belgian press reports. Yahoo France has been told to either remove content produced by the Belgian group’s members or make a financial agreement, Margaret Boribon, head of the Copiepresse group, told Reuters. Copiepresse, which manages copyrights for French- and German-language newspapers in Belgium, is waiting for a Belgian court to rule on an injunction it filed to block Google reproducing portions of Belgian press reports and photos. A decision in that case is expected by next week.
Copiepresse argues that Google stores cached news articles even after the stories are no longer freely accessible on a newspaper’s website. Copiepress was one of five groups that sued Google over the issue last fall. Google has already settled with two of the Belgian groups.
