German Sale Could Fund Tiscali’s UK Triple Play; May Complicate AOL Germany’s Sale

By Jemima Kiss - Wed 23 Aug 2006 10:10 AM PST

So this complicates things for AOL’s plans of selling off its German unit: European telco player Tiscali is considering selling off its German division to fund its UK digital media and triple play operation....Tiscali just bought UK IPTV pioneer Homechoice, in an effort to expand.
German telcos United Internet and Arcor, as well as Dutch firms KPR and Versatel, are all rumored to be in advanced negotiations through UBS: Die Welt reported, via Forbes, that United Internet has dropped interest in the German wing of AOL in favour of Tiscali. BT is also rumoured to be bidding, according to The Business newspaper.
Tiscali’s German wing is valued at around $64 million, so following the $114 million purchase of HomeChoice last week that would allow Tiscali to invest in triple play in the UK and then on home turf in Italy.
